Although working with a diverse range of media, Simon Tyszko's work is a unity. The artist's broad range of materials includes neon, video, bookworks, fabrics and assembled objects whose cumulative effect is a retrospective enquiry of the emotions. Presented as the detective evidences of fragmented reminiscence (including resentment and regret), the artist tempers his memories with a restrained, stylish humour, so creating a mood of reflective playfulness.
Familial relationships are made conspicuous in Tyszko's work, and the various joys and dysfunctional tragedies of home life are summoned by him in what is often an autobiographical enquiry. Letters, audio recordings, super 8 home movies and other personal evidences are the raw material from which he recreates and offers new emphasis to the psychological dynamics and control struggles of the family. Like family life itself, Tyszko's practice is a potent battlefield against which the artist cleverly foregrounds the personal dramas that define his artistic form.
