Curator, art critic, and lecturer of Keio University
Organized a number of exhibitions for the Japan Foundation from 1978 to 1986. Contributed to the introduction and promotion of contemporary art. Founded "Nanjo and Associates" in 1990, organizing a series of exhibitions in Japan to date.
Main achievements are: commissioner of the Japan Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 1997; at the Taipei Biennale in 1998; member of jury committee of the Turner Prize sponsored by the Tate Gallery, also in 1998. Fumio Nanjo was co-curator at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in 1999; member of the selection committee at the Sydney Biennale in 2000; and a specialist for the Japan Selection at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover. Also served as a consultant on several public art and corporate art projects.
As advisory positions: the Vice President of Association International des Critiques d'Art (AICA); a board member of Comité International des Musées d'Art Moderne et Contemporain (CIMAM); also involved in several selection committees of awards and artist-in-residence programs.
1997, published "From Art to the City", a record of 15 years as an independent curator.
2001, as an Artistic Director, devoted to the first Yokohama Triennale 2001.
2002, appointed to the deputy director of Mori Art Museum (open: Autumn 2003) in Tokyo.
