Artist and historian specializing in the history of international and Australian art after 1960. He is a senior lecturer in the School of Fine Arts, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Melbourne and an Adjunct Senior Curator (20th 21th century) at the National Gallery of Victoria. He has published articles and reviews regularly in most Australian art magazines since the late 1980s and has published reviews, since 1989, in "Artforum" magazine, New York, as the journal's Australian reviewer. He was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship in 1993, and has received many other grants and awards. He is currently working on a major history of Australian art after 1968, with the assistance of an Australian Research Council Large Grant. He is also an artist, working collaboratively with Lyndell Brown since 1989, and has therefore been on the receiving end of art criticism. Their work is in several major public and private collections, and they have received many awards and residencies, including the Asialink residency at Sanskriti Kendra in Delhi, India, in early 1998.
