Constructing Construction #1

Where there was once a building, there can now be a void. Out of nothing, monuments can be constructed. The process of construction (which includes reconstruction and deconstruction) and the in-transition of spaces are some of the recurring themes that can be found in my work, including this.

"... this sense of motion is, of course, illusory: rather than capturing an action, the camera stops it."
(Robert Storr; on Andreas Gursky's work "Ratingen swimming pool")

I have used photography to capture the essence of this edifice and in the process, I have reconnoitred the site and its associations physically and symbolically to examine it closely and also to understand the in-betweeness of spaces, the non-places, the transitional aspect of the once-existing and once-present. At the same time, I have created a distance between the viewers and the re-constructed space.

The intention is to raise awareness and to re-instate the significance of this in-betweeness of space, in order to contain a moment in time and hold a presence.

I am interested in concepts of "space" and related issues such as "body" and "time". Through my education and experiences (geographical, social and cultural), I constantly seek for further exploration and understanding of these concepts physically, metaphorically and symbolically from a variety of perspectives.

In addition, I wish to look at both existing and re-constructed spaces from their integrity as being independent and to investigate the tensions between them - as well as how the body, as a separate entity, interacts and communicates with such tensions and spaces.
