The Terminal Salon
Staten Island is a community that is ethnically and economically diverse: the Ferry Terminal Building is one space where that diversity converges. On a large video screen placed inside the main terminal which is a route for more than 60,000 people every day, local residents discuss on camera issues that are their own but at the same time belong to a society at large. Despite the difficulties encountered in the neighborhood, one thing is clear in the video: they also share a tremendous sense of pride in their community.
Working in collaboration with Joan Henry, resident of Richmond Terrace Houses, a New York City Public Housing apartment complex, we encouraged residents to video tape their stories. In addition to being subjects of the video, participants shared in the creative process by shooting much of the footage. The result is a database of faces/memories/experiences. Diverse voices, diverse and shared experiences.
