Ph. D. of Art History and Aesthetics (EHESS – Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris; thesis on 'La Photogénie du Paysage'), Laureate at the Villa Kujoyama, Japan, in 1994-95. Since many years, she researches on landscape, garden and contemporary art in urban environment. Catherine Grout is the author of five books on this last item, 'A Propos de l'art dans la ville', Unité Mobile (ed.), Besançon 1991; 'Le Tramway de Strasbourg', Du Regard (ed.), Paris 1995; 'L'Art en milieu urbain', ed. by Kajima, translated by Erimi Fujihara, Tokyo 1997; 'Pour une réalité publique de l'art', l'Harmattan (ed.), Paris 2000; 'Pour de l'art au quotidien'; and 'Des Oeuvres en milieu urbain', translated by Yao Meng-yin, ed. by Yuan-Liou, Taipei (forthcoming 2001). She was also responsible for the edition of three collective volumes: 'Sites et Paysages', Parc naturel de la montagne de Reims (ed.), 1992; 'Re-discovering the landscape: a crucial urban actuality', ed. by TN Probe, Tokyo 1998; and 'Le paysage de l'espace urbain, actualités du jardin, questions urbaines', ed. in situ 1998, Enghien-les-Bains. Writes for many reviews on contemporary art, architecture and landscape in France and other countries (member of 'Aica' - International Association of Art Critics, since 1989). In 1996, founding member of the 'Groupe de Reserche franco-japonais sur le Paysage Urbain' (University of Tokyo, Toyota Foundation). Expert of the 'Ateliers Internationaux de maîtrise d'Oeuvre urbaine de Cergy-Pontoise'. Since 1994, commissioner for the Biennale at Enghien-les-Bains (in situ) on contemporary artists' interventions in urban environment. Conducted the seminar 'Le paysage dans l'espace urbain', Strasbourg 1996-97 (Strasbourg, Council of Europe, Consulate General of Japan, Japan Foundation) and an international symposion on new aspects of the landscape domain, TN Probe, Tokyo, in 1997. Organized a workshop on contemporary art and landscape at the Tokyo Design Center, Tokyo 1998 and in Pontoise, 2000.
